Where Can I Find (Or What Is) The Basic History Of Film/Movies?
Question: I have searched everywhere on the internet the basic history of movies ( what was the first movie, when was it done, how did it get to where it is today, etc etc) but I cant find it! If anyone could explain the history of film or tell about some site that does say it that would be great!
Answers: You might be better off going to a library and borrowing some books. There are a number of them.
I have a book called How To Read A Film which is mainly about film technique but contains a small section on the history of film.
The film started in 3 countries. France with the Lumiere Bros; America with Thomas Edison (and others) and Australia, which had an active film unit run by the Salvation Army at the turn of the century. They actually produced the first feature length film in the world.
There were also some interesting things happen in terms of the rivalry between different technologies (similar to VHS and Beta video tape) and the various mergers and takeovers between companies. Basically Edison took out all these patents (even for stuff he did not invent) and then sued anyone who used anything similar. Reminds me of Microsoft.
