Why do anime characters have HUGE eyes??
Question: Hi anime lovers, i totally think anime characters are so cute n all, but whats with the HUGE eyes? i mean that size of eye ball is just not human at all,,,haha. cute tho. i think its coz it makes the charater more cute i dunno.
Answers: Partly because it makes them look cute, partly because a lot of facial expression focuses on the eyes and increasing the size of the eyes makes it easier to see what the character is feeling.

I think it's the artistic expression of the person that draws them.
It comes from the fact that animators tried to copy the eyes of Mickey Mouse. They liked them and used them in animation.
Also today more and more are like that, big round eyes. A few years before it wasn't like that. I think it really started to be used with Keiji Gotoh who worked for Gonzo on Kiddy Grade and Kate Keepers
They like them to look like babies.

It was the style of the early artists, and has now become the custom. It's just like American comic books and it's long history of superheroes drawn with huge muscles.

From what i read at a book on how to draw manga. Anime characters with big eyes are usually the good and friendly type and the one's with small eyes are usually the enemy sort of type.

This is the real, correct answer. It has two parts.
1) Eyes are a window to the soul. A person's eyes can tell you a lot about them. In anime, sharp, pointed eyes may mean the person is violent or dominant. Soft, glimmering, rounded eyes can mean innocence, etc. It's up to the artist.
2) Size of eyes is related to age. Larger eyes, small nose, small ears. These are all signs of youth, and so artists exaggerate the eye size in anime to promote the viewer to believe that the subject is a youth. Smaller eyes may indicate age or experience.
So that they look adorable & funny.

maybe it helps in expressing their emotions better. usually, not much movements other than the eyes' and the lips' are brought about on their faces. animations like THE PRINCE OF EGYPT use the movment of the whole face including the cheeks, don't they? besides it makes them look so.................... pretty.
because Japanese and Chinese people have small eyes.. so when they draw manga.. they like the characters to have big eyes.. coz they think its attractive..
probably because the anime drawers want to draw in a style that is uniquely special for anime only. plus it looks cool and you can definitely tell how the anime character feels just by looking at the eyes...

It's partly because the anime tradition was so influenced by Disney and other western animation, which discovered very early on that big eyes made characters look more child-like and therefore cuter and more appealing. But it's also because manga/anime began in Japan at a time when everything western was very fashionable, and big eyes made characters look less oriental. Ironically, while the stories in manga and anime still draw heavily on oriental traditions (demons, ninja and all that), the use of western or westernized names for characters is still very fashionable, right?
